Discipline

Product Marketing

Deciding what a product means in the market — and carrying that meaning to buyers.

About this discipline

Product Marketing is a human-world function, not a channel or a campaign type. It is the work of deciding what a product means in the market — who it is for, what problem it wins on, how it is described, and against which alternatives it is chosen — and then carrying that meaning into every place a buyer encounters it: the launch, the pitch, the website, the pricing page, the renewal conversation.

As a Discipline it sits at the top of the hierarchy and contains one or more Domains. Everything beneath it ladders up to a single purpose: that the right buyers understand the product, choose it over the alternatives, and keep getting enough value from it to stay. Product Marketing owns whether the market gets the product — not whether the product gets built.

Scope & boundaries

This discipline covers…
  • Positioning and messaging — who the product is for, the problem it wins on, and the words used to describe it.
  • Go-to-market strategy and product launch — segmentation, launch tiering, channel plan, and cross-functional launch execution.
  • Market and competitive intelligence — buyer research, win/loss, competitor tracking, and the battle cards that come out of it.
  • Sales and partner enablement — the narrative, decks, demo stories, objection handling, and training that GTM teams carry.
  • Packaging, pricing narrative, and adoption — how the offer is bundled and explained, and how customers are brought to value after purchase.
Belongs to a different discipline…
  • Deciding what gets built and in what order → Product Management
  • Top-of-funnel demand generation and paid acquisition → Growth / Demand Generation
  • Company-level brand identity, reputation and visual craft → Brand & Design
  • Owning the customer relationship and closing the deal → Sales
  • Building and shipping the product itself → Engineering
