Deciding what the product means, and putting that meaning into words
Positioning & Messaging is the Domain where the product’s meaning is decided. It answers the questions everything else inherits — what kind of thing is this, who is it for, what alternative does it beat, and on what basis does it win — and then fixes that judgment in language as a value proposition, a messaging hierarchy, and the proof that backs each claim.
Its purpose is to give the whole company one story to tell. When positioning is settled, the website, the pitch, the launch and the pricing page say compatible things; when it is not, every team invents its own version and the market hears noise instead of an argument.
Nobody can explain the product the same way twice — a new product or segment, a competitor redefining the category, or a pitch that keeps landing with the wrong people.
Decisive and reductive. Choose a frame, accept what that frame gives up, and defend the words against the constant pull to describe everything to everyone.
You leave when the positioning is chosen, written down, evidenced and adopted — sales, marketing and product describing the product the same way without needing to be reminded.
