User Stories & Acceptance Criteria

Stories small enough to build, with done made testable

About this workflow

Breaking a spec into small, vertical stories, each written from the user’s side with acceptance criteria that make ‘done’ testable. The work runs from a story map with the thinnest end-to-end slice marked first, through criteria traced to the spec’s behavior rules and an ambiguity sweep that turns every vague word into a question, to a Story Set and a CSV the tracker imports, re-issued once the team has answered the flags.

Its purpose is to catch ambiguity before the work is picked up rather than halfway through it. A story sliced by architecture layer delivers nothing on its own, and a criterion nobody can test is not one.

The recognizable task

Typical trigger
  • A finished spec needs breaking into stories before the next planning cycle
  • Stories keep coming back from QA because ‘done’ meant different things
  • The backlog holds epics too large to estimate
What good looks like
  • Every behavior rule in the spec lands in a story, and every criterion traces to one
  • The first slice is end to end and marked, and droppable stories say so
  • Every ambiguity flag is answered by the team or explicitly left open
